Welcoming Families From Around the World
El Salvador is the county of origin for my incoming family:
First I will contact the El Salvadorian Embassy to learn of the fundamentals of this country, and inquire about; the population, the economics, averages, family income, and how they earn their income i.e. agricultural or industrial.
Next I will visit an El Salvador Restaurant to get a feel of the foods that they partake of and how they share their meals.
I would visit the church where the population is El Salvadorian to understand the religious practice of the people, to be certain that I will not offend the family.
Next I would ask the priest “who is head of household when both parents are together”. I need to know who to direct my future questions to, and who will have the ability to give permission for our everyday plans i.e. trip and scheduling.

Sauda,
ReplyDeleteI love your pictures!I especially love the flag moving! What a wonderful way to invite your "family" into your classroom1
Great blog!
Sauda,
ReplyDeleteGreat blog!!!! The flag that you have posted is really showing that you are welcoming all the families around the world. Thanks for sharing!!!!
Sauda,
ReplyDeleteI really like the idea that you would consider going to eat at a Salvadorian restaraunt and visting a church! Both of those are great ways to immerse yourself in a culture without going to the country itself. I ate at an African restraunt a few years ago, and it was culture shock for me simpy from the food served.
Sauda,
ReplyDeleteI didn't even think about visiting the church for the family coming to my class. That is a great idea. I love the part about the head of the household. It is good to know! That can be very important when communicating with parents.
Hi Sauda,
ReplyDeleteYou have some really wonderful ideas on how to make your families feel more welcome! I had not thought of visiting restaurants or churches either, but these things can be so simple yet so beneficial. It's one thing to read about and research a culture but it would be so much better to actually talk to people from that culture and get a feel for the different aspects. Great ideas, thanks for sharing!
Sauda,
ReplyDeleteVisiting the families church was an added benefit and understanding who makes the decisions for the family are great ideas. Knowing the decision maker for the family will definitely help with parent meetingw.
